How to Human Course: Thrival Skills for People Who Love Dogs!

buy-nowNEXT SESSION Start Date: December 5, 2019. Also can be done as Self-Paced to start any time.

This online personal growth course is packed full of skills to help you find more joy and balance. It’s meant to take 6-12 weeks.

Are you in love with your life?

Or do you have border collies running around in your head, instead?

Do you:

  • Waste time doing things that feel useless or uncomfortable?
  • Wish your clients or family would listen to you or respect your time?
  • Feel stressed or burned out?
  • Feel pressured to be "happy" or get upset when others aren't "positive"?
  • Need more energy or time in the day?
  • Have habits you want to quit or build?
  • Wonder whether there's more to life than simply surviving?
  • Want authentic connections?
  • Need a group of friends you can count on?

The "How to Human" online course helps dog trainers, shelter staff, and all other animal lovers live more wholehearted lives.

Why animal lovers? Because I am an animal behavior geek and animal lovers are my people! The activities, analogies, and information I present in this course fit nicely with what you already know, making them easy to apply.

NEXT START DATE: December 5, 2019.

6-12 week course with an optional live component.

We have a special Facebook group just for this course, with a lot of support and bonus education.  Starting December 5, 2019, we will watch a recorded video for each section together in the group, where you can ask questions about the material. These sessions will happen each Thursday, noon to 12:45 pm Pacific time [PST] for 6 sessions.

DATES: December 5, 12, 19, 26, January 2,  and January 9 (yes, even through the holidays, because that's often when some of our members need the most support). Live sessions will be recorded.

For registrations after December 4, this course will be available as a self-paced class with the Facebook community. Recordings of the live component will still be available.

You can start any time and do this course at your own pace! I also have taught this course live before, so there are recordings of those live videos in the course materials. Members from the previous classes are in the group, too. Our tribe is growing and you are welcome in that safe space.

Hi, I'm Grisha Stewart, MA, CPDT-KA, KPACTP.

I have those letters and such after my name because I've studied as a mathematician and a dog trainer. I prefer to just be called Grisha.

Those accomplishments are not who I am, they just reflect some of the schooling I've had. I've also taken graduate work in psychology, but stopped before getting the second master's degree because the BAT book took off and I chose to travel and teach around the world.

My passion is wellness for both dogs and people.

For real. I love connecting with people. I didn't always enjoy deep connection, not until I learned to have better boundaries. More on that in the course!

I love my life. I think my biggest accomplishment so far is to adapt to constant change with a grounded, joyous, compassionate, grateful outlook. It hasn't come easy, and of course I'm still on my growth path, but I truly enjoy my life, tears and all, and that's pretty amazing to me.

There are so many useful practices and ideas that have brought me joy and equanimity. I want to help share what I've learned with you. I'm an avid reader and lifelong learner, so my "How to Human" course is chock-full of resources to dive more deeply into the waters of conscious living.

Here are the list of topics. Subject to change!

  • Section 1: Changing Habits Efficiently
  • Section 2: Feelings, Needs, Strategies, and Boundaries
  • Section 3: The Border Collie in Your Head
  • Section 4: Being Present
  • Section 5: Stillness and Unconditional Love
  • Section 6: Impermanence, Groundlessness, and Letting Be

Barking Mad: BAT and Other Techniques for Frustration

frustration-yieldbuy-now

Start Date: any time!

"I WANT TO DO THAT. NOW!" If dogs could speak in a human language, some of them would be screaming these words in frustration.

We can help our dogs learn to slow down and take information in, rather than rushing into greetings or demanding something from you. Rushed greetings can lead to fighting with other dogs and even just pulling toward other dogs or people can be hard for the handler to manage.

The ideal dog for this course should exhibit frustration toward people, dogs, or some other specific thing. You can also be working on prevention of frustration with a younger dog. This course is NOT for resource guarding -- just an overly large interest to go get to something or do something.
From Amalie H., a student in Barking Mad:

I was actually out this afternoon with my other dog, (fearful human-shy dog Robin), and when we saw that there were other people nearby, I sort of went into BAT-mode. 🙂 The indications that she was giving that she'd noticed them were very subtle, and I totally let her make the decisions for where we were going, and she pretty much always made a good choice-- she turned away, arced around them.

It was such a lightbulb moment to see how much these dogs will make the right decisions given the opportunity and the safe structure to do so without us being pushy and making them go where we say. I'm excited to keep using all the things I've learned with all of my dogs. It's really been a fantastic course for us.

This course was written by Grisha Stewart, MA, CPDT-KA, KPACTP. Barking Mad covers a variety of techniques for impulse control, relaxation, and appropriate greetings, including clicker training, applied behavior analysis, and Behavior Adjustment Training (BAT). It will look at the root of why we are getting the barking, pulling, or other frustration behavior and go over practical solutions.

NOTE: BAT 101 or a thorough understanding of BAT 2.0 from elsewhere is required as a prerequisite for this course.

If you are enrolled in this course and have an ABBA membership, you can participate in the Facebook group for peer feedback. This is a member-moderated group for Grisha's students.

BAT 101: Introduction to Behavior Adjustment Training

buy-nowlunging

Start Date: any time!

Aggression, frustration, and fear are no fun for the dog or for the caretaker. If you have a dog with these issues or you work with these issues in your training or behavior mod business, this course is for you.

BATlogo-colorBehavior Adjustment Training (BAT) has quickly become one of the most popular force-free techniques to rehabilitate and prevent (over)reactivity in dogs and even other species, like horses and even humans. This is your chance to start adding this useful, naturalistic technique to your training toolbox.

BAT 101 is appropriate for beginners. Even if you are experienced with the older version of BAT, this will still be useful because there was a lot of new BAT 2.0 material in 2014.

If you are enrolled in this course and have an ABBA membership, you can participate in the Facebook group for peer feedback. This is a member-moderated group for Grisha's students.

Here are some of the things you will learn for your dog:

  • How to use a leash in a way that maximizes your dog's learning and comfort
  • How and when to stay out of your dog's way
  • How to read your dog's body language
  • How to safely manage walks and training set-ups to maximize learning and minimize stress

"I was looking for anything that would help us with the elusive loose leash walk. I was not disappointed. Once my golden is wearing a harness and I use the described rope leash technique, he is almost a gentleman. I can walk in a store with him casually sniffing bags of dog food and even politely greeting people. Wonderful. We even went for a run together. Thank you."

- BAT 101 Student, February 2015

"Have studied canine psychology for many years but have to say that by using BAT I have had amazing success with my reactive dog ...thank you BAT.☺

- Lorraine W

BAT is great for helping dogs with fear gain confidence
BAT is for fear, too, not just aggression. Most barking, growling, etc. is from fear, anyway.

This course was written by Grisha Stewart, MA, CPDT-KA, KPACTP. Leash skills will be heavily emphasized in this intro course, because they are the very foundation of BAT. It is essential to be able to give the dog a sense of freedom while maintaining safety. The leash skills are not just something we do before we do BAT, they are the fabric that holds BAT together. Once a client fully masters the leash skills, they are probably already 80% of the way toward doing BAT successfully.

Note: Intro to BAT is a pre-requisite for all of the later BAT courses. If you already registered for this course elsewhere, you get free access here in ABBA. [Access Request Info]

Empowered Puppy Raising Course

buy-now_MG_2257

Start Date: any time!

Puppy classes were a big leap forward in the socialization of our dogs, but too much time is still spent on 'obedience.' This course has 25 lessons that cover essential skills for puppies and their human families. You'll learn to socialize well and also train puppies to choose to play our silly human games like grooming, vet care, etc.

This course includes BAT for puppies, empowered counterconditioning techniques, and clicker training, among other things. The dog-geek discussions are primarily meant for professional dog trainers, but the how-to portion will be accessible to 'regular' puppy parents.

"The way the course is run with video and written explanation means it is great for new or experienced owners. It is also suitable for dog trainers that want to join with a puppy. The format allows flexibility for the student to fit it in around life, and join a great community of trainers.”

”The content has really focused on important life skills and has introduced new exercises each week. The delivery is in a very easy to read format, and being able to upload videos is really great for self development. Grisha and the TAs are very helpful and supportive and have done an excellent job in sharing their knowledge. I would highly recommend this course for any level of handler." - Katey A
