Can You Really Erase the Emotion from a Memory?

In the Office Hours, I answer members' pet training and behavior questions in live sessions, which are recorded and shown here. Please log in or sign up for a Student or Pro membership to see the video.

Dog training and care questions in this video:

  • When my dog gets wet, either from rain or from a bath, (which he does not enjoy,) he is very cuddly and physically playful. Normally, he is more inhibited about this kind of physical interaction.  Is this common?
  • Looking into buying a dog crate for my puppy. Should you have two crates, one for home, one for in the car, or could you use one soft fabric type crate for both scenarios?
  • Is it best to travel with a dog in a car crate and train a puppy to like this, instead of on sitting on back seat or in car boot?
  • Where is the best place to set up my puppy's play pen and crate within my house? I have a small living room (the most ideal pace), tiny bathroom and spare room. I want to focus on training the puppy to be left alone as I work during the day. Should I put the puppy in the living room or spare room?
  • If your dog barks at a some trigger out of fear or frustration and you give your dog a treat, do you reinforce the barking? The food is not reinforcing that emotion, but what about the behavior?
  • Today we were working with BAT and the "decoy" dog was becoming restless, jumping up and wanting to play. This was very exciting for Lucy. So we intuitively and spontaneously changed our pattern and started moving more parallel, not walking, more like figure 8' give him a break. My question is -is it ok to change the basic circular BAT pattern? What would you have done?
  • Special topics:
    • I talked about some of the points from Joseph LeDoux's interview and work, especially reconsolidation and the possible benefits of "compound extinction" - working with more than one trigger stimulus simultaneously.  This also brought some follow-up questions.
      • Can you explain how Joseph was using the word extinction?
      • Would exposure to multiple dogs be related to flooding?
      • Is this the same kind of extinction burst that isn't favored on Susan"s hierarchy?
      • To pull up the memory, are you trying for arousal or just under threshold exposure to the trigger?
